Our Brother Joe

On September 16, 2011, Lt. Joseph (Joe) L. Szczerba of the New Castle County Police lost his life in the line of duty.   He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, that morning.    This is the highest award for valor within the New Castle County Police and it is the first time it has ever been awarded in the history of the New Castle County Police.   Joe was a beloved husband, son, brother and uncle.   He was a decent, honest man, who lived the concept of ‘To Protect and Serve’ to the highest level. Joe truly enjoyed our annual  golf outing.   He will be greatly missed and will always be there with us in spirit.   Beyond participating in the golf outing, where he laughed and teased with everyone, Joe was very active in the overall operations.   Each year, Joe and Gerry would shop for the door prizes, where he not only tried to stretch the funds as far as possible, but truly purchase gifts, that he thought the players would enjoy.   He was a key player in getting the gifts to the golf course and having them on the table for the post outing meal.  He made sure all the snack bars were out on the tables.   Finally, Joe was the one who read the names of the winners at the outing award ceremony. Future outings will never be the same as the first fifteen, but in many ways there will always be five Szczerba brothers participating on those September gatherings.
