Dad

The passing of time is relative to circumstances and time. It’s hard to believe that the Szczerba Family Golf Outing is entering its 30th year. Our dad who passed away on February 26, 2010 never played in any of our outings, as a matter of fact, he never played a round of golf in his life.

In his youthful days, he loved to play baseball, football, and basketball. He was extremely competitive; not liking to be part of a losing effort. Our Dad’s Wilmington High School basketball teams posted some of the best records in school history.

As an adult, he was regarded as one of the fastest underhand softball pitchers in the tri-state area. Also, he played in numerous industrial and traveling basketball leagues; some nights playing in an early evening Wilmington game, and then catching a train to Philadelphia for a twilight game. His competitiveness continued well into his senior years; playing rough touch football in his 50’s, being active in slow pitch softball into his mid 60’s, and also participating in tennis tournaments until his mid 70’s. To put it bluntly, our Dad didn’t even like losing a game of Scrabble.

Our Dad was very vocal and well spoken; always willing to share his thoughts and opinion on any subject. His daily actions, activities, and deeds left no doubt what our Dad valued most in his life: his family and his faith. He was a very proud and well-respected man because of his religious and family values; always being a trustworthy, reliable, and dependable individual.

Our Dad’s legacy is the road map he is leaving behind detailing how he lived his life as an ideal role model to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
